What you'll study

The programme blends fundamental computer science topics with specialist software engineering modules. In early years you study programming, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, mathematics for computing, and databases to build a firm theoretical and practical base. As you progress you take modules in software design and architecture, object-oriented development, software engineering processes (including requirements, modelling and testing), operating systems, networks and web technologies.

Later stages emphasise practical development: group software engineering projects, individual honours project work, and optional advanced modules such as machine learning, human–computer interaction, cybersecurity, cloud and distributed systems, mobile application development and DevOps practices. Teaching methods include lectures, practical laboratory sessions, programming labs, seminars, group design sessions and supervised project supervision. There is often the option to take a year-long professional placement or a year abroad to gain industry experience and enhance employability.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on a combination of academic qualifications and, where appropriate, relevant experience. Typical applicants hold A-levels including Mathematics or an equivalent qualification in a numerate subject. Practical qualifications such as BTECs in computing-related subjects, the International Baccalaureate, Access to HE diplomas or recognised international equivalents are considered. GCSE-level English and Mathematics (or equivalent) are normally required.

Keele welcomes mature applicants and those with non-traditional backgrounds; applicants may be asked to provide examples of programming or technical experience, and interviews or admissions tests can be used in some circumstances. International students should hold recognised English language qualifications at the level required by the university.

Career prospects

Graduates leave prepared for a broad range of roles in the digital economy. Common career destinations include software developer/engineer, systems analyst, quality assurance and test engineer, DevOps or site reliability roles, database administrator, front-end or back-end web developer, mobile application developer and IT consultant. With further training or study, graduates also move into specialised areas such as machine learning engineering, cybersecurity or data science.

The course’s project and placement opportunities help build a portfolio of practical work valued by employers. Graduates also pursue postgraduate study or professional qualifications to deepen technical specialisms or move into research and higher-level technical roles.
