This programme in Agroclimatology and Climate Change trains students to understand the interactions between climate and agricultural systems, and to design adaptation and mitigation responses for sustainable food production. What you'll study

The programme combines core climate science with applied agricultural and environmental topics. Teaching typically covers fundamental and applied modules such as synoptic and regional climatology, micrometeorology, agroclimatic zoning, crop–climate interactions, climate change science and impacts, greenhouse gas fluxes from agroecosystems, and adaptation and mitigation strategies for agriculture.

  • Quantitative methods and modelling: statistical analysis of climate and yield data, climate model interpretation, downscaling methods and scenario analysis.
  • Spatial tools and observation: GIS for land and climate data, remote sensing for vegetation and soil moisture monitoring, meteorological station data management.
  • Hydrology and soil–plant–atmosphere processes: agrohydrology, evapotranspiration, soil moisture dynamics and irrigation scheduling under variable climates.
  • Policy, economics and risk management: risk assessment, farm-level adaptation planning, climate policy instruments and sustainable land management practices.
  • Practical work: laboratory sessions, field campaigns (microclimate and flux measurements), computer workshops and use of climate and crop models.
  • Research project / thesis: an independent research project that applies methods taught on the programme to a real-world agroclimatic question, often in collaboration with research institutes or industry partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant first degree or equivalent qualification in agriculture, agronomy, environmental science, geography, meteorology, soil science or a related discipline. Candidates with professional experience in agronomy, agricultural consultancy or climate services may also be considered.
