What you'll study

This programme combines core theoretical debates in international relations with applied study of contemporary global challenges. Typical core topics include theories of international relations, global governance, international political economy and research methods (qualitative and quantitative), culminating in a supervised research dissertation or practice-based project. Students choose from optional modules that reflect current areas of staff expertise and global policy interest, such as security and conflict resolution, human rights and humanitarianism, development and global inequality, migration and refugee studies, foreign policy analysis, regional politics, and the politics of globalisation.

Study structure is organised to develop academic skills and vocational competence. You will attend seminars and lectures, participate in workshops and simulation exercises, and produce assessed essays, policy briefings, research reports and a major independent dissertation. The programme is typically available full‑time and part‑time, enabling both recent graduates and those in employment to study at an appropriate pace.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject (for example politics, international relations, history, sociology, law, economics or a related social science). Applicants with a lower-class honours degree and substantial relevant professional experience, or those with alternative qualifications, may also be considered. International applicants must demonstrate competence in English through an accepted qualification or test; if English is not your first language you will need to meet the University’s standard postgraduate English requirements or equivalent. All applicants will be assessed on the strength of their academic record, references, and personal statement outlining motivation and suitability for the course.
