What you'll study

This programme combines core engineering science with applied design and project work. Early modules build a foundation in mathematics, mechanics, materials and engineering computing. Core themes through the programme include structural analysis and design, geotechnics and ground engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, transportation and highway engineering, construction technology and management, and surveying and site investigation.

Teaching typically mixes lectures and seminars with laboratory practicals, CAD/model-based design sessions, fieldwork and group design projects. Students work on realistic briefs that develop technical drawing, finite element/analysis software, quantity surveying basics and specification writing. A substantial final-year project allows you to carry out independent research or an applied design exercise, often linked to an external client or employer.

There is also emphasis on professional skills: report writing, project management, health and safety, sustainability and teamwork. Many students have the option to take a year in industry or a year of study abroad to gain practical experience and strengthen employability.

Entry requirements

Typical entry routes require A-levels (or equivalent) with strong performance in mathematics; physics or another relevant science is highly desirable. Applicants with vocational qualifications such as BTEC in an engineering or science subject, Access to HE diplomas with appropriate units, or international qualifications are considered. You should also have a good standard of English and mathematics at GCSE or equivalent level.

Selection normally takes into account academic achievement, personal statement and, where used, a short interview. Applicants with relevant work experience or evidence of practical skills from clubs, workshops or college projects are viewed favourably. International applicants will need to meet Nottingham Trent University's standard English language requirements for undergraduate study.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a wide range of roles across the construction and infrastructure sectors. Typical job titles include graduate civil engineer, site engineer, structural technician, geotechnical assistant, transport planner, and graduate roles with contractors, consultancies and local authorities. With experience and further training graduates can progress to chartered engineer status, project or contract management, specialist design roles, or consultancy and advisory positions.

The programme also provides a solid base for postgraduate study, for example an MSc in structural or geotechnical engineering, construction management or related specialisms, and for apprenticeships and graduate training schemes offered by engineering firms and infrastructure clients.
