What you'll study

The programme combines advanced core training in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics with elective modules that allow specialisation in areas such as development economics, public finance, labour economics, industrial organisation and environmental/resource economics. Students typically take advanced coursework in applied econometric techniques (time series, panel data, causal inference), theoretical topics and sectoral applications, and participate in research seminars and reading groups.

Assessment is usually a mixture of written examinations, research assignments and a substantial research dissertation or thesis. The dissertation provides an opportunity to undertake independent empirical or theoretical research under the supervision of a department academic, often drawing on regional data and policy questions relevant to the Eastern Cape and southern Africa.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an Honours degree in Economics (or a four-year bachelor’s degree with Honours-level training) with a strong academic record. A solid background in microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods is required; evidence of competence in mathematics and statistics is useful.

Admission typically requires a research proposal or statement of intent, academic transcripts, and at least two academic references. Applicants whose first language is not English will be asked to provide acceptable proof of English proficiency. For research-focused pathways, prospective students should be able to identify potential supervisors whose research interests align with their proposed topic.
