What you'll study

This MSc provides a broad yet technically deep curriculum combining theory, practical skills and an independent research or development project. You will study core topics such as advanced software engineering, data analytics and machine learning, cybersecurity principles, cloud and distributed systems, and research methods for computing.

• Advanced Software Development – modern software design, testing, DevOps practices and project-based development.
• Data Analytics and Machine Learning – data processing, statistical methods, supervised and unsupervised learning and practical model development.
• Cybersecurity and Network Defence – threat modelling, secure systems design, cryptography basics and defensive strategies.
• Cloud and Distributed Systems – architecture, virtualisation, containerisation and scalable services.
• Research Methods and Professional Practice – research design, ethical issues, technical communication and project management skills.
• MSc Project or Dissertation – an extended individual project with options to work on applied industry problems, lab-based experimentation or research-led investigations, supported by academic supervisors.

Optional modules and short practical labs allow you to tailor your study towards particular interests such as human–computer interaction, embedded systems, mobile application development or advanced databases. The course emphasises hands-on work in computing labs and the application of contemporary tools and platforms used by industry.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a good honours degree (UK second class or equivalent) in computing, computer science, software engineering or a closely related discipline. Applicants with a lower second-class degree may be considered if they have relevant professional experience; those from non-computing backgrounds are welcome to apply to the conversion pathway but may be required to demonstrate some prior programming experience or complete bridging modules.

International applicants whose first language is not English will be expected to meet the university's English language requirements (for example an IELTS score at postgraduate level) or equivalent. Professional experience, a portfolio of work, or references can strengthen an application, and interviews or short assessments may be used in some cases.
