What you'll study

The DProf is a practice‑based doctorate that combines advanced research training with sustained enquiry into an aspect of professional practice. You will develop a bespoke research programme that typically includes: a critical review of relevant literature; advanced research methods and ethics; the design and execution of an applied research project anchored in your professional setting; and dissemination of findings in formats suitable for both academic and practitioner audiences.

Core learning themes include:

• Research methods: qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches appropriate to practice‑based enquiry, including data collection, analysis and reflexivity.
• Research ethics and governance: ethical considerations in workplace research and navigating organisational approval processes.
• Theory and practice integration: connecting theoretical frameworks to practical interventions and evaluating impact.
• Knowledge mobilisation and dissemination: translating research outcomes into policy, professional guidelines, training materials and academic outputs.
• Professional development: building a portfolio that demonstrates leadership, critical reflection and research impact within your sector.

The main output is an original doctoral submission that demonstrates contribution to knowledge and to professional practice. Depending on the nature of the project, the submission may combine a written thesis with practice‑based artefacts (for example, implemented interventions, professional resources or structured portfolios) and an accompanying critical commentary.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant postgraduate qualification (such as a Master’s degree) or demonstrate equivalent professional experience and learning at a comparable level. Significant and recent professional practice in a relevant field is essential, as is a clear, practice‑focused research proposal that identifies a problem or area for improvement in your workplace.

• A substantive record of professional responsibility and evidence of capability to undertake independent research in a practice context.
• Support from your employer or host organisation is strongly recommended when your project requires access to workplace settings, data or participants.
