What you'll study

This honours degree covers the scientific principles behind the discovery, design, analysis and manufacture of medicines. You will study modules in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutics and formulation science, analytical chemistry and quality assurance, together with molecular biology and biochemistry topics that inform modern drug development. Practical laboratory work is central to the course: you will develop core laboratory skills in synthesis, purification, chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis, microbiology and formulation testing.

The programme also includes training in experimental design, statistics, research methods and professional skills such as scientific communication, regulatory awareness and good laboratory practice. Assessment is through a mixture of practical reports, coursework and written examinations, and you will complete a substantial research project or dissertation that demonstrates your ability to plan and execute an extended piece of independent laboratory‑based work.

The Study Abroad element allows you to spend an approved term or year at an international partner institution as part of your degree, following negotiated modules that complement your Lancaster studies and broaden your understanding of global pharmaceutical science and industry practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have chemistry at A level (or an equivalent qualification) plus at least one other science or mathematics subject. Lancaster accepts a range of UK and international qualifications, including Access to Higher Education Diplomas and recognised international school certificates. Practical laboratory experience through formal qualifications or relevant work/voluntary experience is advantageous.

All applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate English language proficiency to the level required by the University (through recognised tests or approved qualifications). Mature applicants and those with non‑standard backgrounds are considered on an individual basis; the admissions team can advise on acceptable equivalent qualifications and the process for applying for the Study Abroad option.

Typical career destinations include laboratory scientist roles in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, quality control and assurance, formulation and development scientist positions, analytical chemist posts, regulatory affairs, clinical trial support and manufacturing under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

Other pathways include roles in chemical and environmental testing laboratories, sales and technical support for life‑science suppliers, and further study such as research MSc/PhD programmes or professional conversion courses in related disciplines.
