What you'll study

This programme blends rigorous physics content with contemporary approaches to teaching and learning. You will revisit core topics in physics (classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, waves and optics, and modern physics) at a level appropriate for classroom leaders, alongside specialised courses in physics pedagogy.

• Advanced physics refresher modules — focused courses to strengthen conceptual understanding and problem-solving across the physics curriculum.
• Physics pedagogy — evidence-based approaches to teaching physics, including inquiry-based learning, modelling instruction and use of multiple representations.
• Curriculum design and assessment — designing standards-aligned units, formative and summative assessment strategies, and inclusive practices for diverse learners.
• Laboratory and technology methods — contemporary lab pedagogy, data acquisition and analysis, and integrating simulations, sensors and low-cost instrumentation into practical work.
• Educational research and measurement — research methods, classroom-based action research and interpretation of learning data to inform practice.
• Practicum or capstone project — an extended school-based teaching placement or a project applying research to practice (curriculum development, professional learning intervention, or an applied research study).

The programme emphasises project-based and active learning approaches consistent with WPI's teaching philosophy. Electives allow you to tailor study towards leadership in STEM education, informal learning settings or preparation for doctoral study in education or physics education research.

Entry requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in physics, physical science, engineering or a closely related STEM field. Applicants with strong teaching experience and a degree in another discipline may be considered if they demonstrate sufficient physics knowledge.
• Evidence of professional experience in education is highly desirable for the MPed: current or recent teaching, coaching, curriculum work or equivalent roles strengthen an application.
• Academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining professional goals and reasons for undertaking the programme, and two or more letters of recommendation (preferably academic and professional).
• Demonstrated proficiency in English for applicants whose first language is not English, through an approved test or equivalent evidence where required by the university.
• Some applicants may be invited to an interview or asked to submit a short teaching or lesson demonstration as part of the selection process.
