What you'll study

This MSc combines technical cyber security subjects with information assurance, risk management and operational response. Taught modules typically cover areas such as:

• Network and systems security — architectures, secure configuration, defence-in-depth and hardening of enterprise and industrial networks.
• Cryptography and secure communications — applied cryptographic primitives, key management and protocols used to protect data in transit and at rest.
• Digital forensics and incident response — techniques for evidence capture, chain of custody, log analysis, malware analysis and coordinated incident handling.
• Penetration testing and vulnerability assessment — practical offensive testing methodologies, exploit development and remediation guidance.
• Information assurance, governance and risk — security management frameworks, risk assessment methods, standards and compliance considerations for regulated environments.
• Secure software engineering — principles of secure development lifecycle, code review and common application vulnerabilities.
• Operational resilience and critical national infrastructure security — threats to industrial control systems, resilience planning and business continuity.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory classes in specialist cyber ranges and practical workshops. The programme culminates in a substantial individual project or thesis, often carried out in partnership with industry, government or research groups, allowing students to apply techniques to realistic defence or enterprise problems.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally require a good undergraduate degree in computer science, electronic engineering, mathematics or a closely related discipline. Applicants with a lower technical degree but significant relevant professional experience in IT, network administration, security operations or military/commercial cyber roles may also be considered.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet Cranfield's English language requirements (e.g. an approved English test at the level specified by the university). Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview or asked to provide a technical portfolio or references demonstrating relevant practical experience.
