A one-year postgraduate qualification that provides core knowledge and practical teaching skills for working with young children. Suited to graduates or experienced educators seeking an ACECQA-accredited pathway into early childhood teaching and a direct credit-bearing transition into the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood).

What you'll study

The course comprises seven core units plus one elective. Core units are HT5001 Foundations of Education Development; HT5002 Perspectives on Teaching, Learning and Development; HT5003 Children’s Play, Creativity and the Arts; HT5004 Professional Placement 1; HT5005 Working as an Early Childhood Professional; HT5006 Children’s Language and Literacy; and HT5007 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Electives offered subject to demand include HT5008 Professional Placement 2, HT6017 Education Governance and Management and HT6018 Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood Education. Students who need ACECQA recognition should select HT5008 Professional Placement 2 as their elective.

Entry requirements

Academic pathways to admission include an Australian bachelor degree or equivalent; an Australian graduate diploma; an Australian graduate certificate or equivalent plus at least two years' relevant industry experience; or an advanced diploma/associate degree or equivalent plus at least five years' relevant industry experience. Applicants must meet English requirements (for example IELTS overall 6.0 with no band lower than 6.0, or equivalent documented English study), satisfy the course Inherent Requirements, hold a valid Working with Children Check before placement, and have suitable vaccinations where required by placement providers.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles in early childhood settings and can pursue full teacher registration via further postgraduate study. Typical graduate roles listed by the provider include Childcare Educator, Early Childhood Assistant, Kindergarten Assistant and Early Learning Support Officer. The diploma also provides a direct pathway into the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood).
