What you'll study

The curriculum covers the five subdivisions of chemistry together with supporting physics and mathematics. Course work and departmental programs integrate hands-on laboratory experience and training on specialized scientific instrumentation. Students may engage in independent study (CHE 493) and the Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE); more than 80% of students participate in faculty-mentored undergraduate research. The department also offers seminar programming that discusses professional roles and practical skills for chemists.

Entry requirements

Students enter TCNJ as chemistry majors in the standard BS program; transfer into the ACS-certified degree requires faculty advisement and departmental approval based on a student’s interests. The department provides regular faculty advising to help define an academic path and align coursework with career or graduate-study goals.

Career prospects

Graduates commonly enter the chemical profession, pursue graduate degrees, or move into chemical education. TCNJ’s location in New Jersey’s pharmaceutical/chemical region provides access to employers in pharmaceuticals, materials, flavors and fragrances, cosmetics, and testing laboratories. Recent employers listed by the department include Bristol Myers Squibb, Dow Chemical, ExxonMobil, International Flavors and Fragrances, and L’Oreal; alumni also proceed to competitive graduate and professional schools such as Johns Hopkins, Rutgers, UNC Chapel Hill, UPenn, and Yale.
