What you'll study

The programme is a research-oriented doctoral cycle leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Students undertake supervised research over four years, prepare a dissertation, and complete the university’s specialist entrance examination after passing national entrance tests. Specific research topics, supervisors and detailed study plans are determined within the university’s PhD structures and competitive proposals (competitive offers list).

Entry requirements

• Academic qualification: Master’s degree or specialist diploma.
• National entrance tests: all applicants must sit the single entrance exam (EVI) comprising two parts — a foreign language chosen by the entrant (English, German, French or Spanish) and a Test of General Academic Competence (TZNK).
• 2026 additional requirement: the single entrance examination in methodology of scientific research (EVV) is mandatory.
• Test delivery: EVI and EVV are administered using the organisational and technological procedures of the External Independent Evaluation; results are recognised across higher education institutions.
• Score thresholds: successful admission requires EVI total of at least 300 points (sum of the two components) and EVV of at least 100 points.
• Registration and exam timing (2026): registration for EVI and EVV main session runs 23 April–14 May (until 18:00) at any institution registering candidates; the tests are taken 14–29 July. Applicants may use EVI results from 2024 or 2025 (both components from the same year only) and/or EVV results from 2025 where permitted.
• Application process (2026): electronic submission of PhD applications via personal accounts on https://vstup.edbo.gov.ua/ from 07 August to 07 September. Within the same portal applicants must register for the university’s specialty entrance exam, which is held in-person at the university from 08 September to 21 September.
• Administrative timeline (2026): recommendation for admission (state-funded or contract) will be provided no later than 22 September; applicants must confirm their chosen place and submit original documents in person or via qualified electronic signature by 17:00 on 25 September; the formal enrolment order will be published by 28 September.
• Application limits: an entrant may submit up to 10 applications across all levels and bases, of which up to 5 may be for competition on state-funded places. Priority marking of applications is not used for PhD admissions.

Graduates who complete the PhD programme typically pursue careers in research institutes, academia, advanced technical roles in industry, or high-level specialist positions that require independent research competence. The programme prepares candidates to lead research projects, teach at higher-education institutions, or work in R&D departments aligned to their doctoral topic.

Scholarships & funding angle

Funding routes include state-funded (budget) positions and contract (paid) places. In 2026 full-time study is recruitable only via state funding; evening and part-time study are available only on a contract basis paid by individuals or legal entities.
