A one-year full-time master's that combines theoretical study of heritage and public history with practical workplace experience. Suited to students aiming for heritage-sector roles, curatorial doctoral study, or applied public-history practice.

What you'll study

The programme is organised around taught 20-credit modules and a 60-credit dissertation. You begin with three 20-credit modules (two compulsory, one optional), then take a further three 20-credit modules (two compulsory, one optional), and finish with an independent 60-credit dissertation. The dissertation can be a traditional written thesis or a practice-based project aimed at those targeting employment.

  • Module themes available include galleries, libraries, archives and museums, conflict heritage, medieval manuscripts, and contemporary history.
  • Optional study across the department's specialist MAs allows you to build a personalised combination of topics (for example Ancient Greece and Rome or local contemporary history).
  • There is an option to undertake a History and Heritage study trip (possible destinations include Greece, Italy or Poland).
  • A designated module offers a guaranteed work placement (internal or external) amounting to 100 hours of practical, graduate-level experience plus seminar/tutorial reflection and an extended reflective essay.
  • An extended MA route includes a semester abroad in partnership with Appalachian State University.
