Doctoral training is centred on independent, original research guided by supervisors within USTH and its affiliated laboratories. Specific doctoral fields advertised include:

Duration is 36 months for applicants entering with a Master’s degree or equivalent Level 7 qualification; for candidates admitted with a very good (or higher) Bachelor degree the standard duration is 48 months. The curriculum is research-driven and tailored to the candidate’s project and supervisory team.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold either a full-time Master’s degree or a full-time Bachelor’s degree with very good standing (or an equivalent Level 7 qualification) in a relevant discipline. Evidence of prior research experience is required—this can be a research-oriented Master’s thesis, a published paper/report, or at least two years’ experience as a lecturer or researcher. English proficiency must be demonstrated by one of specified certificates (examples include TOEFL iBT ≥46, IELTS ≥5.5, or equivalent). Applicants must submit a research proposal approved by their proposed supervisors and may nominate up to two supervisors according to the listed supervisory eligibility rules.

Career prospects

Graduates obtain an internationally recognised doctoral degree and are prepared for careers in academic research, research institutes, higher education, and research roles in industry or government where advanced research skills and project leadership are required.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

USTH provides several scholarship schemes for enrolled PhD students. For Vietnamese candidates there are scholarships such as Pathway to Success, Capacity Building, Academic Encouragement and Access scholarships which can cover up to 100% or a portion of tuition depending on the scheme and eligibility. International candidates may be eligible for the Global Scholarship, USTH Partner Scholarship, or USTH Support Scholarship; these can also cover up to 100% of tuition subject to conditions. The university additionally offers financial support for PhD candidates engaged in teaching activities. Scholarship decisions are made by USTH’s Scholarship and Financial Aid Council.
