What you'll study

The curriculum balances theology, counseling and cross-cultural perspectives. Example courses and topics listed in the program materials include:

• Theological Foundations of Counseling — biblical principles and a biblical theory of personality.
• Pre-marital & Marital Counseling — methods for engaging couples preparing for marriage and for struggling marriages.
• Understanding World Religions — study of major religious belief systems to understand adherents' worldviews and behavior.
• Interpersonal Communication & Conflict — biblical foundations of relationships, personal relating styles, small group dynamics and conflict management skills.
• Apologetics — an introductory survey of defending the Christian worldview in contemporary contexts.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent for international applicants) from a recognized institution. Official transcripts and a spiritual life reference are required. Graduates of Bible colleges, liberal arts colleges and state universities are encouraged to apply. Applicants from non-accredited pre-seminary institutions or those with a pre-seminary GPA below 2.5 may be admitted on academic restriction. Candidates without a bachelor’s degree but with relevant ministry experience may be considered under additional ministry and research/writing requirements (contact admissions for details).

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to serve as chaplains in a variety of settings where people lack regular access to a local church. Typical placements noted by the program include:

• Hospital chaplain
• Prison chaplain
• Hospice chaplain
• Workplace or marketplace chaplain
• School chaplain
• Christian camp ministry
• Airport or other institutional chaplaincies

The program also notes that Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is commonly completed separately through approved clinical placements; students typically pursue CPE alongside or after the degree to meet particular employer or endorsing body requirements.
