What you'll study

The program requires a total of 120 credits with at least 45 credits in designated Political Science courses, including a minimum of 30 senior (300/400) level credits (at least 12 at the 400 level). Core political science requirements total 18 credits and include:

• POLI 355 and POLI 357 — 6 senior (300/400) level credits in political philosophy/theory
• POLI 309 — 3 senior (300/400) level credits in Canadian politics and government
• One of POLI/INTR 330 (international and global politics) or POLI 342 (comparative politics) or an approved equivalent — 3 senior (300/400) level credits
• POLI 277 and POLI 278 — 6 junior (200) level credits

In addition to the core, students must complete a minimum of 27 credits from designated Political Science major elective courses. Sample electives listed as designated include CMNS 401, GLST/GOVN 403, GLST/GOVN 440, GLST/POEC 483, GOVN 301, GOVN 390, GOVN/HSRV 400, GOVN 405, HADM 369, POEC 230 and others as offered by the university.

Entry requirements

Students follow the program regulations in effect at their time of enrolment and must select a major when they enter the BA (4‑year) program. The English writing skills requirement is met by holding credit in ENGL 255 (students are strongly encouraged to take ENGL 255 early), by earning a B- (70%) or better in an AU English course above preparatory (100) level, or by receiving credit for an English course with a B- or better. Students enrolled in a second undergraduate degree have the English writing requirement waived. Athabasca University offers a degree conversion provision for AU three‑year degree holders who wish to convert to a four‑year degree. A residency requirement mandates a minimum of 30 credits obtained through Athabasca University.
