What you'll study

The program combines foundational biomedical science with applied pharmacy practice and a research-focused honours year. Early years cover human biology, organic and medicinal chemistry, biochemistry and pharmaceutics to build understanding of how drugs are designed and how they act in the body. Core pharmacy subjects include pharmacology, therapeutics, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical formulation and compounding, pharmacokinetics and toxicology.

Practical and professional skills are developed through simulated patient encounters, compounding laboratories, dispensing practice and supervised placements in community and hospital pharmacies. The honours year requires a substantial independent research project in an area such as clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutics, pharmacology or pharmaceutical sciences, supported by coursework in advanced topics and research methods.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate strong achievement in secondary school science subjects, with chemistry commonly required. The University assesses applicants on academic results and, for some cohorts, may consider relevant experience or prior tertiary study. International applicants must meet the University's English language requirements and provide certified academic transcripts.

Domestic students seeking registration pathways should be aware that completion of the degree is followed by a period of supervised practice and national registration processes required for practising as a pharmacist. The programme may also have additional requirements such as immunisation documentation, a criminal history check for placement eligibility and compliance with health screening for clinical placements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles in community and hospital pharmacy and are eligible to undertake the supervised practice and registration required to become a registered pharmacist.
