What you'll study

The Juris Doctor curriculum covers the core areas of substantive and procedural law required for practice, combined with skills-based subjects and opportunities for applied legal work. Typical core subjects include Contract Law, Torts, Criminal Law, Property Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Evidence, Civil Procedure, and Corporations Law. Complementary subjects commonly offered are Legal Research and Writing, Professional Responsibility and Ethics, Taxation Law, Family Law, and Commercial Law.

USQ structures the JD to emphasise legal reasoning, advocacy, negotiation, statutory interpretation and client-focused practice. Most students undertake a sustained research or capstone project and practical subjects such as clerkships, mooting, or simulated client work that develop courtroom and transactional skills. The programme is delivered with flexible online study options alongside intensive on-campus or virtual workshops to support distance learners.

Entry requirements

Admission to the JD normally requires completion of a recognised undergraduate degree in any discipline with an acceptable academic record. Applicants are assessed on tertiary academic performance and, where relevant, professional experience. International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements.

Applicants without a recent academic record may be considered on the basis of substantial professional experience or other tertiary study. Each application is assessed holistically, and shortlisted candidates may be asked for references or a statement of purpose outlining their reasons for studying law.

Career prospects

Graduates of the JD are eligible to apply for admission to legal practice subject to meeting local admission board requirements and completing any required practical legal training. Common career destinations include private legal practice (as solicitors or barristers where local pathways permit), in-house counsel roles, government and regulatory agencies, corporate compliance, and specialist advisory roles in areas such as commercial law, family law, property, and criminal law.

Beyond practice, a JD is also suited to careers in policy development, advocacy, academia, the judiciary (after requisite experience), and senior roles in business where high-level understanding of law, risk and governance is valued.
