What you'll study

This programme focuses on contemporary pedagogies and subject knowledge for Design and Technologies in secondary schools. Core topics include curriculum and syllabus interpretation, lesson and unit planning, assessment and reporting, classroom and workshop management, and safety and risk management in technology spaces. Subject-specific studies cover materials and manufacturing, digital technologies (including CAD/CAM and basic programming concepts), systems and control, food and textile technologies where relevant, and prototyping and rapid manufacture.

Students also study professional practice modules that develop classroom pedagogy for practical subjects, inclusive and differentiated approaches for diverse learners, and the integration of design thinking and project-based learning. Practical workshops and project work develop hands-on competence with tools, equipment and software commonly used in school technology programs.

The programme typically combines coursework, practical tasks and a supervised professional or school placement component so participants can demonstrate curriculum application and classroom teaching of design and technologies.

Entry requirements

• Completion of an undergraduate degree (bachelor level) in any discipline.
• Either initial teacher education qualification or current teacher registration is normally expected for applicants wishing to teach in schools; alternatively, applicants with substantial industry experience in design, manufacturing or digital technologies may be considered and may be required to present a portfolio and attend an interview.
• Academic transcripts and a statement of intent outlining teaching or industry background and reasons for undertaking the programme.
• Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language proficiency requirements.
