What you'll study

This program provides advanced coursework in core areas of contemporary mental health practice. Units cover foundational topics such as biopsychosocial approaches to mental health, assessment and formulation, evidence‑based psychosocial interventions, suicide prevention and crisis responses, trauma‑informed practice, and basic psychopharmacology as it applies to multidisciplinary care. You will also study service systems, policy and law relevant to mental health, cultural competence (including working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples), and ethical practice.

Study is delivered fully online through a blend of recorded lectures, readings, case studies and interactive activities. Assessment typically includes written assignments, case formulations, clinical reflections and applied projects designed to integrate theory with workplace practice. The program enables professionals to consolidate existing workplace learning and develop skills in clinical reasoning, risk assessment, care planning and interprofessional collaboration.

Entry requirements

• Academic qualification: A recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as psychology, nursing, social work, allied health or other health and human services fields. Applicants with a degree in another discipline but relevant professional experience may also be considered.
• Professional experience: Relevant work experience in mental health or human services is highly regarded and may be required for some applicants.
• English proficiency: International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency consistent with postgraduate coursework entry requirements at Australian Catholic University.
• Other requirements: Some applicants may be required to provide a CV, referee reports or a statement addressing their suitability for postgraduate study in mental health.
