Core themes include investigative theory and methodology, legal and ethical frameworks, evidence management, interviewing and intelligence analysis. You will study both traditional investigative disciplines and contemporary areas such as digital and cyber investigations, financial and fraud investigations, and investigative reporting.

• Investigative theory and practice – frameworks for planning, conducting and managing investigations across civil, commercial and criminal contexts.
• Law, procedure and ethics – criminal and civil procedure, admissibility of evidence, privacy law and ethical decision-making.
• Interviewing and information gathering – cognitive and behavioural approaches to interviewing, statement-taking and witness management.
• Digital and cyber investigations – basics of digital evidence, chain of custody, open-source intelligence (OSINT) and investigative uses of social media.
• Financial and fraud investigations – frameworks for identifying, tracing and reporting financial wrongdoing and corruption.
• Intelligence analysis and risk assessment – analytic tradecraft, threat assessment and use of intelligence for operational decision-making.
• Evidence writing and reporting – preparing investigative briefs, expert reports and courtroom presentation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor degree in a relevant discipline (for example, criminology, law, policing, security studies, accounting, information technology) or have substantial professional experience in investigative work. Professional experience in policing, corporate investigations, regulatory agencies or related fields is highly regarded.

Typical requirements include:

• A recognised undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Evidence of professional experience or a statement of purpose outlining suitability for the program.
• For applicants whose prior study was not in English, an approved English language proficiency test score or other evidence of English competency.
• Additional documentation such as a CV and referee reports may be requested for some applicants.
