The MRes in Management combines advanced research methods training with subject-specific study and a substantial independent research project. Core study typically includes modules on qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, research design and ethics, and advanced data analysis. You will also take specialist management modules that reflect the research strengths of the Business School, such as strategic management, organisational behaviour, leadership and innovation, and international business and governance.
The programme is structured to move from taught research and disciplinary modules in the early part of the course to a sustained independent research dissertation under academic supervision. Students learn practical research techniques (for example interviews, focus groups, survey design, statistical modelling or qualitative coding), develop a detailed research proposal, and complete a major thesis or research project that contributes to knowledge in a management-related area. There are opportunities to tailor the programme through optional modules, supervised placements with industry partners, or collaborative applied research projects.
Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in business, management, social sciences or a related discipline at a level that demonstrates the ability to pursue postgraduate study. Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a traditional academic qualification. Prior study in research methods is helpful but not always essential, as the MRes provides intensive methodological training.
Applicants are usually asked to submit a personal statement outlining their research interests and, in many cases, a short research proposal. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview with potential supervisors. International students must meet the university's English language requirements or provide evidence of an equivalent qualification.
