What you'll study

This programme delivers a blend of psychological theory, social science perspectives and practice-based training. Core topics typically include introduction to psychological science, developmental psychology, social psychology, abnormal psychology and lifespan mental health. Students also study applied social care subjects such as counselling skills, family dynamics and family therapy approaches, community intervention, social policy and law affecting vulnerable groups.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary leaving qualification with satisfactory grades in subjects demonstrating literacy and numeracy. Equivalent qualifications, mature applicant routes and recognised further education awards are considered. As this is a practice-oriented programme, selection may include an interview and the submission of a personal statement demonstrating motivation for working with vulnerable populations.

• Proficiency in English is required as teaching and assessment are in English; evidence may be required for applicants whose first language is not English.
• Successful applicants must be able to meet professional suitability checks for placement (for example a background check or police conduct certificate where applicable).
• Specific subject prerequisites are not always mandatory, but prior study in social sciences or health-related subjects is advantageous.

Typical job destinations include support worker roles, family support practitioner, community outreach worker, mental health support assistant and roles in probation or youth services.
