What you'll study

The MDS curriculum combines theoretical foundations with applied skills. Core themes typically include development theories and history, development economics, governance and public policy, poverty and inequality, sustainable and environmental development, and gender and social inclusion. Research methods and quantitative/qualitative data analysis are emphasised to equip students for independent study and evaluation work.

Students normally take a mix of taught modules and a substantial research component. Typical modules and subjects you can expect include:

• Development Theory and Policy: classical and contemporary approaches to development, comparative perspectives and policy debates.
• Development Economics: macro- and micro-level approaches to growth, livelihoods, employment and resource allocation.
• Research Methods for Development: research design, survey methods, qualitative interviewing, statistical analysis and mixed-methods approaches.
• Project Planning and Management: logical frameworks, budgeting, monitoring, evaluation and results-based management.
• Poverty, Inequality and Social Protection: measurement, causes and policy responses, including targeting and inclusion strategies.
• Environment and Sustainable Development: natural resource governance, climate change adaptation and sustainable livelihoods.
• Urban and Rural Development: spatial planning, migration, agricultural development and peri-urban issues.
• Gender, Human Rights and Social Policy: intersectional analysis, policy instruments and community-based approaches.
• Electives and Practicums: options often include NGO management, conflict and development, humanitarian response, and applied monitoring and evaluation.

The programme culminates in an independent dissertation or major research project that applies learned concepts and methods to an empirical development question. Provision is often made for part-time study and for combining coursework with professional responsibilities.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (such as social sciences, economics, geography, environmental studies, public policy or similar). A degree with a standard equivalent to a second-class honours is commonly required; applicants with substantial relevant professional experience may be considered where academic qualifications differ.

Applicants whose first language is not English may need to demonstrate proficiency in English to a level sufficient for postgraduate study. Shortlisted candidates could be invited for an interview or to submit a research proposal as part of the selection process.
