What you'll study

The Economic Science BS is built around core courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics, with a heavy emphasis on mathematical and empirical methods. You will take modules in econometrics, mathematical economics, statistics for economists, and applied data analysis, supported by calculus and linear algebra. Elective topics typically include public economics, labour economics, international trade, industrial organisation, development economics and environmental economics.

WPI’s hallmark project-based curriculum is integrated into the degree. Students normally complete research- and team-based projects such as an Economic Major Qualifying Project (MQP) and may participate in an Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) that examines economics in a global or interdisciplinary context. Coursework commonly includes programming for economists (for example Python, R or similar), database methods, and lab-based classes that develop applied quantitative skills.

Entry requirements

Admission to WPI is competitive. For prospective undergraduates, successful applicants typically have a strong high school background in mathematics (including precalculus and preferably calculus), coursework in statistics if available, and solid grades across a rigorous programme of study. Demonstrated interest in economics, mathematics or data science through coursework, projects or extracurricular activities is beneficial.

WPI considers the whole application, including academic transcripts, recommendation letters and a personal statement. Transfer applicants are usually expected to present college-level coursework in calculus and introductory economics or statistics and a competitive college GPA.
