The AVD (Aircraft Vehicle Design) — Structural Design option at Cranfield is a specialist master's pathway focused on the structural design, analysis and certification of aircraft and aerospace structures. It suits engineering graduates and early-career professionals who want to develop advanced skills in structural mechanics, composite materials, finite element analysis and multidisciplinary structural design for aerospace applications.
This programme combines core aircraft vehicle design teaching with specialist structural design modules. You study structural mechanics and strength of materials, advanced finite element analysis and computational methods, composite materials and manufacturing, fatigue, damage-tolerance and durability, and crashworthiness and impact behaviour. The course emphasises practical application: typical modules include structural optimisation and sizing, aeroelasticity and load development, structural dynamics and vibration, structural health monitoring and nondestructive inspection techniques, and certification and airworthiness considerations for structures.
Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, worked examples, hands-on laboratories and computer-based workshops using industry-standard tools. A significant element is group design work that replicates multidisciplinary aircraft development, plus an individual research project or thesis supervised by academic staff and often sponsored or co-supervised by industry partners. Throughout the programme there is a strong focus on composite structures, manufacturing methods and repair techniques, reflecting current industry practice.
Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant undergraduate degree in engineering, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or a closely related physical science. A good UK honours degree (typically upper second class or equivalent) or recognised international equivalent is usually required. Candidates with significant relevant industrial experience or professional qualifications may also be considered.
All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English to the standard required by the university.
