What you'll study

The Traditional BSN curriculum combines foundational biomedical sciences with progressive nursing theory and practice. Early years focus on anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, pathophysiology and pharmacology alongside introductory nursing concepts. Core nursing modules cover health assessment, fundamentals of nursing, clinical reasoning, pharmacology for nurses and therapeutic communication.

As you progress you will study specialised areas such as adult medical-surgical nursing, maternal and newborn care, paediatric nursing, mental health and psychiatric nursing, community and public health nursing, and care of older adults. Leadership, ethics, research in nursing and evidence-based practice are integrated across the programme to prepare you for complex care delivery and quality improvement.

Practical learning includes high-fidelity simulation in dedicated skills labs, clinical practicums in acute-care hospitals, community agencies and outpatient settings, and interprofessional learning with allied health disciplines. The programme culminates in advanced practicum experiences designed to consolidate clinical competence and professional decision-making in preparation for registration and practice.

Entry requirements

Typical entry requirements include a secondary school diploma or equivalent with required credits in biology and chemistry. Admissions commonly expect a competitive overall academic record; specific minimum grade requirements may apply. Additional requirements for clinical placement typically include up-to-date immunisations, a recent health assessment, Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification, and successful completion of criminal background checks and drug screening. Some applicants may be required to attend an interview or complete a standardised nursing entrance test where applicable. Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to sit the national licensure examination for registered nurses and commonly enter practice in hospitals, community health services, primary care clinics, long-term care facilities and outpatient specialties. Typical early-career roles include staff nurse on medical-surgical, emergency, maternity, paediatric or mental health units, community/public health nurse, school nurse or occupational health nurse.

With experience and further study, career pathways include clinical specialist roles, charge nurse and nurse management, nurse education, case management, infection control, quality improvement, and advanced clinical practice following postgraduate study (for example, graduate-entry programmes to become a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist). The BSN also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in nursing research, leadership or public health.
