What you'll study

This programme combines foundational behavioural science with specialised courses on ageing. Core topics include lifespan development, biological and cognitive changes in later life, social determinants of ageing, and the psychology of health and chronic illness. Students study research methods and statistics to prepare for evidence-based practice, and complete modules on ethics, policy and programme evaluation as they apply to older adult services.

• Foundations of Behavioural Science: introduction to developmental psychology, motivation, learning and social behaviour.
• Gerontology Core: theories of ageing, sociology of later life, demographics and population ageing.
• Health and Cognition in Ageing: neurocognitive disorders, dementia, mental health and coping with chronic illness.
• Research Methods & Statistics: quantitative and qualitative methods, data analysis and programme evaluation.
• Policy, Ethics & Services: ageing policy, long-term care systems, ethics of care and advocacy for older adults.
• Practicum / Fieldwork: supervised placements in residential care, community agencies or hospital settings to develop practical skills in assessment, case management and interprofessional collaboration.
• Electives & Capstone: options often include counselling older adults, palliative and end-of-life care, assistive technology, or a research capstone project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Typical entry standards include a satisfactory academic record and evidence of readiness for undergraduate study. Successful applicants usually provide a personal statement outlining interest in gerontology or working with older adults.

• Recommended subjects: biology, psychology, sociology or health-related courses where available.
• Additional requirements: some applicants may be asked to attend an interview or provide references; clearances such as background checks and up-to-date immunisations may be required for placement eligibility.
• Transfer students: prior college credit will be evaluated for transfer; Mercy College commonly supports transfer pathways from community colleges.
