What you'll study

This programme combines child development theory, evidence‑based special education strategies and practical classroom experience. Core topics typically include early childhood development; assessment and individualized programme planning (IEPs and IFSPs); differentiated curriculum and instructional strategies for young learners with disabilities; behaviour support and positive behaviour interventions; collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams; assistive and adaptive technologies for communication and learning; and legal/ethical issues in special education.

Coursework is sequenced with campus seminars and supervised field experiences. Students complete multiple practicum placements in early childhood centres, inclusive preschool classrooms and community early intervention settings, progressing to a culminating student‑teaching placement under mentor supervision.

Entry requirements

• Secondary school completion or equivalent with evidence of academic readiness; typical offers reference a combination of grades or GPA rather than a single score.
• Prerequisite study in English and mathematics is usually expected; previous study in child development or psychology is advantageous.
• Successful candidates must meet professional suitability checks: satisfactory background check, immunisation and health requirements, and any required clearances for working with children.
• Selection may include an interview or written statement demonstrating commitment to working with young children with disabilities and relevant volunteer/work experience where available.
• Graduates intending to teach will need to meet the state's teacher certification requirements, which typically include completion of approved content and pedagogical coursework and passing of statutory professional examinations or assessments.
