What you'll study

The programme integrates foundational psychology with professional coursework in childhood education for grades 1–6. You will study child and adolescent development, learning and motivation, cognitive and social-emotional development, and educational psychology alongside subject-specific methods for teaching literacy, mathematics, science and social studies at the elementary level.

• Core psychology: developmental psychology, research methods, basic statistics, abnormal child behaviour, and learning theory.
• Education and pedagogy: elementary curriculum design, assessment and evaluation, classroom management, differentiated instruction, literacy instruction (reading and writing methods), and mathematics pedagogy for early and middle elementary grades.
• Inclusive and specialised practice: introduction to special education, strategies for English language learners, behaviour intervention techniques, and universal design for learning.
• Professional practice: supervised field experiences progressing from observation to practicum and culminating in full-time student teaching in partner schools, along with seminars on professional issues in education.
• Capstone and electives: research or practice-based capstone project and electives that may include educational technology, family and community engagement, or applied developmental topics.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary school diploma. Admission typically takes into account academic performance in high-school coursework (with particular weight given to English and mathematics), a personal statement or interview demonstrating motivation for a career in elementary education, and references.

• Proof of competency in English and basic mathematics is required; if relevant, prior coursework in psychology or education is beneficial but not essential.
• Candidates must satisfy professional clearance requirements to undertake school placements, which commonly include background checks, health screening (such as immunisation records), and any required local certification checks.
• Some routes may require passing of state or institutional pre-professional checks or exams prior to student teaching; programmes often provide advising to meet these requirements.

Graduates are prepared for initial licensure to teach grades 1–6 in primary schools and commonly progress into classroom teaching roles in public and independent schools. The programme’s psychology component also opens related pathways.
