What you'll study

This one- to two-year diploma covers the essential areas of modern business practice with an emphasis on applied skills. Modules typically include:

• Principles of Management – fundamentals of organising, planning, leadership and decision-making in small to medium enterprises.
• Business Finance and Accounting – basic bookkeeping, preparing and interpreting financial statements, budgeting and cash-flow management.
• Marketing Fundamentals – market research, customer segmentation, promotional planning and digital marketing basics.
• Operations and Project Management – process mapping, quality control, supply chain basics and managing small projects.
• Business Law and Ethics – legal responsibilities, contract fundamentals and ethical considerations for businesses.
• Entrepreneurship and Small Business – business planning, feasibility analysis and start-up essentials.
• Professional Communication and ICT for Business – report writing, presentations, spreadsheets and common business software.
• Workplace Practice or Placement – practical industry experience, simulated business exercises or an employer placement where available.

Teaching combines lectures, workshops, case studies and practical assignments. Assessment is typically by coursework, practical projects and in some modules timed tests. Students are encouraged to develop a portfolio of practical work to support progression into employment or further study.

Entry requirements

Entry is designed to be accessible to a wide range of applicants. Typical requirements include one of the following:

• General secondary-school qualification (for example GCSEs or equivalent) with passes in English and maths.
• A Level or other post‑16 qualifications at lower-level/s, or successful completion of a pre‑diploma or access course.
• Relevant work experience or employer sponsorship for mature applicants without formal qualifications; interview and/or an assessment task may be required.

English language competence is required for those whose first language is not English; applicants may be asked to provide evidence of proficiency or to complete an internal assessment. Coast Colleges also offers pre-entry advice and support for applicants who need to build specific skills before starting the course.
