A technically focused management master’s that trains engineers, technologists and scientists to lead projects, systems and operations. Suited to candidates with a STEM bachelor’s who want management skills tailored to technical environments and to experienced non‑STEM applicants who can meet the program prerequisite.

What you'll study

Students complete six core courses before taking specialization and capstone work. Core topics include:

  • Engineering management fundamentals — portable management skills such as quality, product development, human resources, communication, critical path networks, and supply/inventory management.
  • Project management — fundamentals and tools (including Microsoft Project), negotiation, selection and auditing of projects, and project termination practices.
  • Operations and capacity management (prerequisite ENM 600) — design and management of internal capacity, process design, supply chain and knowledge management, and problem identification/resolution.
  • Advanced engineering economics — financial analysis for projects (present/future value, NPV, ROI, IRR) and examination of how changing technologies and global competition affect business models and technology choices.
  • Total quality management — theories and tools (Six Sigma, benchmarking, SPC, ISO 9000/2000), costs of poor quality and related ethical issues.
  • Global technological environment — how technology‑driven globalization alters production, supply chains, consumption and transnational interactions; assignments emphasize applied analysis.

Specializations:

  • Project Management — prepares students to be effective project/program managers.
  • Systems Engineering — focuses on managing system life‑cycle activities.

Capstone sequence: a three‑course capstone series (beginning with ENM 607A) where teams complete a culminating engineering management project under faculty supervision. ENM 607A is one month in duration, is graded H/S/U, and requires completion of all six core courses and the chosen specialization courses before registration.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, physical sciences or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Candidates from other disciplines may be admitted but could be required to take additional coursework. Non‑degree students are not eligible for this program. The program lists a 3.0 semester‑credit prerequisite course: EGR 220 (an introduction to probability and statistics) or equivalents such as CSC 208 or MTH 220, covering data summaries, probability, common distributions, inference and regression with engineering and business applications.
