What you'll study

The program requires a minimum of 52 semester hours of certification coursework, including certification classes and a year-long field experience. Key learning objectives and curriculum emphases include:

• Classroom management and instructional design for elementary settings.
• Analysis of elementary classroom practices to create inclusive learning environments.
• Reading and writing instruction strategies targeted at upper elementary grades (grades 4–8).
• Culturally responsive communication methods for diverse student populations.
• Final master’s project involving original research and an in-person presentation demonstrating applied educational scholarship.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in any content area from an accredited institution with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. All sections of a basic skills test (ACT, SAT, or WEST-B) must be taken and scores submitted to WSU Pullman. Applicants must also pass subtests one and two of the National Evaluation Series elementary education test by the application deadline. Documented supervised experience with kindergarten through eighth-grade children is required; public school classroom experience is preferred.

Career prospects

Graduates earn preparation to teach kindergarten through grade eight and are positioned for roles such as elementary classroom teacher (K–8), reading or literacy specialist, curriculum specialist or instructional coordinator, corporate educator or youth program director, and educational consultant or policy advocate.
