Entry requirements
Applicants must hold a B.S. or B.A. and demonstrate considerable computing experience, sufficient mathematical background, and promise for advanced study and research. Natural candidates include holders of degrees in computer science or related technical areas such as mathematics, engineering, or physics.
- Required equivalent undergraduate preparation (UCCS courses): CS 1150 Principles of Computer Science; CS 1450 Data Structures and Algorithms; CS 2080 Programming in UNIX; CS 2060 Programming in C; CS 2160 Computer Organization and Assembly Language Programming; CS 3160 Concepts of Programming Languages; CS 3300 Software Engineering; Calculus 1; Calculus 2; Discrete Math.
- A student who has CS 1450 but lacks other prerequisites may be admitted provisionally and must complete missing prerequisites after admission; satisfying prerequisites can take up to two years.
- Mathematical background: at least two semesters of university calculus, a discrete mathematics course, and one additional mathematically rigorous course.
- Academic record: typical undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0; GPAs between 2.75 and 3.0 considered individually; applicants with GPA below 3.0 who recently graduated will be required to submit GRE scores (quantitative 148 considered favorable). Provisional admission is likely for GPA below 3.0; the Graduate School requires provisional admission for GPA below 2.75.
- International applicants: all application materials by March 1 for Fall and October 1 for Spring. GRE all sections required (quantitative 148 favorable) unless applicant has a bachelor’s degree with GPA ≥3.0 from an ABET-accredited CS or closely related U.S. program. English proficiency: TOEFL ≥80, IELTS ≥6.5, or Duolingo ≥115 unless degree was completed in the U.S. Transcripts and course-by-course evaluations by a NACES/AICE member are required for foreign coursework; UCCS recommends specific evaluation vendors.
- U.S. applicants: submit all materials by April 1 for Fall and November 1 for Spring for regular admission consideration.
