DegreeMasters
FieldAgriculture

A research-focused master's that develops skills in experimental design, statistical analysis and technology application for agricultural problems in both rural and urban contexts. Suited to graduates aiming for careers in education, cooperative extension, applied research or other agriculture-related professions who want a strong grounding in research methods and critical thinking.

What you'll study

Students work with an advisory committee to create an individualized program of study by the end of their second quarter. The approved program includes required core courses, a selection of specialization courses, electives, independent study, and either a thesis (AGS 696) or a comprehensive examination (AGS 697) for those on the agricultural education track. Most students complete a thesis; thesis candidates must submit two final bound copies and pass a final oral examination covering the thesis and the area of specialization.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and complete requirements for a Single Subject and Specialist Credential in Agriculture before advancing to candidacy and taking the comprehensive exam. Applicants without a bachelor’s degree in agriculture must complete undergraduate Huntley College of Agriculture coursework before admission. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 (overall or in the final 90 units) is required. The agricultural education program coordinator must receive three letters of recommendation. International applicants must achieve a TOEFL score of 550. The Graduate Admissions Committee may issue conditional admission, requiring compliance with admission conditions within three quarters.

Career prospects

The program has supported careers in public schools, community colleges, universities, cooperative extension and other agricultural fields. Emphasis on research design and statistical analysis prepares graduates for applied research roles, extension education, and leadership positions where evidence-based advocacy and technical proficiency are required.
