What you'll study

Entry requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; a plant-science–related major is preferred.
• Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 for unconditional admission.
• Undergraduate coursework should include biological and physical sciences and courses aligned with plant science emphases (examples: horticulture, entomology, soil science, plant pathology, ecology, integrated pest management).
• Applicants without a plant science background must complete, prior to admission, equivalents of: biological science (minimum one quarter/semester general biology with lab), physical science (minimum one quarter/semester general chemistry with lab), one quarter/semester of statistics, and one quarter/semester of plant science (horticulture, botany, plant physiology, plant pathology, soil science, etc.). Completion of these prerequisites allows the application to be considered but does not guarantee admission.
• Required application materials submitted via Cal State Apply: curriculum vitae or résumé; academic transcripts from all accredited institutions attended; a personal statement of 300–500 words addressing interests and qualifications, intended emphasis (for example plant breeding, plant pathology, entomology, soil science), relevant research experience, and how the degree fits future goals.
• International applicants must meet English proficiency requirements: TOEFL 550 paper / 213 computer / 80 internet or IELTS overall 6.5, with scores earned within two years of application.
• Applicants must identify and obtain a commitment from a faculty member willing to serve as their advisor before applying; applications without a designated major professor will not be considered. Contact department faculty or the interim department chair for assistance.
• Complete applications are due in Cal State Apply on April 1 for entry the following fall semester.

Career prospects

Graduates may move into public-sector roles such as soil conservationist, natural resource specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or agricultural/standards inspector for the California Department of Food & Agriculture or county agricultural commissioners’ offices. Private-sector opportunities include positions in entomology, plant pathology, integrated pest management, plant breeding, horticulture, agronomy, urban agriculture, and irrigation design. The degree also prepares students for doctoral study and careers in academic or research settings.
