What you'll study

The curriculum is integrated and emphasizes primary care for families and adults alongside advanced practice foundations. Course topics called out in the program materials include nursing research; health policy and the politics of health care; advanced health assessment; and advanced pharmacology. Sample courses listed on the program page include:

• NUR 6510 – Advanced Health Assessment and Differential Diagnosis (3 credits): builds advanced assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills and includes a clinical component.
• NUR 6540 – Primary Care Clinical Management: FNP I-A (3 credits): the first in a sequence of clinical management courses focusing on application of advanced pathophysiology, clinical decision-making and development of diagnoses and treatment plans in adult primary care; integrates research, teaching/health promotion and collaborative practice.
• NUR 6520 – Advanced Practice Professional Issues (2 credits): examines the APRN role, regulation, interprofessional collaboration and accountability in contemporary health systems.
• NUR 6600 – Advanced Practice Capstone I (1 credit): listed as a capstone experience.

Program totals and clinical requirements provided by the school: 28 credit hours and 665 clinical hours.

Entry requirements

• Master’s degree in Nursing
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Active RN license
• Two letters of recommendation
• Personal statement
• Applicants must also meet any state authorization requirements; AIC participates in NC-SARA and accepts students from a number of states per its state authorization guidance.

Career prospects

The program is positioned to prepare graduates for the Family Nurse Practitioner role in primary care and increasing scope of practice in community and primary health settings. Completion readies students for FNP credentialing processes and equips them to deliver culturally responsive care to underserved and diverse patient populations.
