What you'll study

Core practical and theoretical elements are integrated so students learn both fundamentals and applied skills. Key taught and practised topics include:

  • Project design workflow: requirements analysis, specification setting, team meetings and detailed design.
  • 3D modelling and digital design: creation of 3D drawings using 3D CAD/CAM/CAE systems.
  • Prototyping by high‑precision 3D printing and iterative design modification.
  • Computer‑controlled machining and 3‑axis CAM machining centre work to produce final parts.
  • Operation and performance evaluation using test rigs to verify whether products meet specified requirements.
  • Laboratory and workshop practicals such as Mechanical Structure Practicum (linkages, cams, gear trains, use of engine and gearbox examples), CAD/CAM System I & II (project‑based design/manufacture/analysis), Monozukuri practicum using both general-purpose and CNC equipment.
  • Supporting subjects: strength of materials, materials and control fundamentals, and specialised laboratories in areas such as thermal engineering, functional materials and surface design.
