A suite of accredited engineering diploma programmes at Vaal University of Technology, offered as three‑year and extended four‑year pathways. Suited to students with a National Senior Certificate who seek vocationally-oriented engineering training across civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, metallurgical and industrial fields.

What you'll study

The faculty provides discipline-specific diploma programmes rather than a single unified curriculum. Areas identified include Civil Engineering; Metallurgical Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Operations Management; Chemical Engineering; Electrical Engineering (specialisations in Power, Electronics, Computer Systems and Process Control); and Mechanical Engineering. Programmes are vocationally focused and designed to deliver practical and technical engineering competencies.

Entry requirements

Admission for the three‑year engineering diplomas requires a National Senior Certificate with a minimum APS of 24 and at least level 4 for Mathematics, Physical Science and English. Extended four‑year diploma programmes require a National Senior Certificate with a minimum APS of 22 and at least level 3 for Mathematics, Physical Science and English. Technical & Vocational Science results are used in the selection process for Electrical Engineering. International applicants have their qualifications evaluated by the International Office and SAQA.

Career prospects

Graduates typically enter technical and operational roles within engineering firms, manufacturing, utilities, process industries, construction and maintenance. Diplomas aim to prepare students for technician and technologist positions, further vocational training, or articulation into higher qualifications.
