A coordinated dual-degree program pairing a B.S. in one of Lafayette’s engineering majors with an A.B. in International Studies. It suits students who want rigorous engineering training plus language fluency and cultural depth to work internationally or for globally active employers.

Programme overview

This dual-degree pathway combines a Bachelor of Science in chemical, civil, electrical and computer, mechanical, or integrative engineering (with a focus in bioengineering, environment & energy, or robotics) and an A.B. in International Studies. Students pursue an engineering curriculum alongside a language-focused international-studies sequence that emphasizes cultural understanding and immersion. The program is structured so students can complete both degrees within four years plus a summer with careful advising.

What you'll study

The international-studies component centers on a language of concentration and coursework that builds regional or cultural expertise where that language is spoken. Lafayette offers advanced study in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish; other languages may be approved by the program chair. Full cultural immersion is expected, typically via study abroad (most often spring semester of sophomore year) or work abroad (most often a summer).

Entry requirements

The International Studies major within the dual degree requires 8–12 credits. Students who demonstrate advanced language proficiency and therefore do not need a language course must take an additional elective to reach the 8-credit minimum. The program uses targeted advising to enable completion of both degrees in up to four years plus a summer.

Career prospects

Graduates combine engineering skills with proficiency in at least one additional language and cultural literacy. This preparation is well suited to engineering or technical roles overseas, positions with U.S. companies that operate internationally, and continued graduate study in engineering fields. Alumni typically enter engineering jobs or pursue further engineering education.

Scholarships & funding angle

While specific scholarships are not listed here, programs that include study- or work-abroad elements commonly have dedicated funding sources, institutional study-abroad scholarships, and external language-immersion grants; students should consult Lafayette’s financial-aid and study-abroad offices and the program chair for available support.
