A three-year undergraduate degree combining sport science fundamentals with practical adventure-sport skills and fieldwork. Suited to students who want to work in the outdoor and adventure tourism sector or apply sport-science knowledge to activities like climbing, kayaking and expedition leadership.
Study areas include human responses to challenging environments, performance enhancement in adventure sports, leadership and coaching, and applied psychology. Practical skills cover map and compass work, rope skills up to single-pitch climbing, paddle surfing, kayaking and open-water activities. Laboratory-based modules use physiology and exercise equipment (rower, kayak machine, cycle ergometers, treadmills) alongside thermal and hypoxia chambers to analyse biochemical, physiological and psychological responses during exercise.
The programme admits students via UCAS (code C611) with a September start; the published duration is three years full time. Clearing places may be available. Part-time study is possible and the degree offers optional additional years for a Placement Year or an International Experience Year; students decide about these options after starting the course. For advice on eligibility and application steps contact Bangor University's admissions or clearing services.
Graduates are prepared for roles across the outdoor and adventure sector and broader sport and exercise fields. Typical destinations include adventure-tourism operators, expedition leadership, outdoor education, strength and conditioning or roles combining therapeutic and performance support in outdoor contexts. The course emphasises employability through hands-on field experience and optional workplace placements.
Students may be eligible for government-funded student loans depending on prior study, age and residency; part-time study allows balancing work and study. The university's Student Finance and Careers services provide guidance on funding, placement sourcing and work-experience opportunities.
