A research doctorate linking professional architectural practice with scholarly inquiry, centred on applied projects that are built or under construction. Suited to practising architects or those embedded in practices who can develop an original, practice‑based research proposal and want supervisory support from academic and practitioner supervisors.

Programme overview

The Architectural Practice MPhil/PhD is a practice‑based doctoral route at The Bartlett School of Architecture. Candidates undertake research through projects arising from their own professional practice; study may be undertaken full‑time or part‑time and status can change during the candidature. The supervisory team comprises a Principal Supervisor and a Subsidiary Supervisor drawn from noted academics or practitioners. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least three months before your preferred start date; the programme normally starts in October, February or May. The published UK duration for full‑time study is three calendar years.

What you'll study

Doctoral work integrates designed projects and a written thesis that share a central research theme. Research outputs may take many media (for example drawing, film or making), but a fundamental requirement is that the applied projects are ones which have been completely built or are in the process of being built. The PhD emphasises originality and advancing disciplinary discourse through practice‑informed investigation.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need at least an upper second‑class (2:1) UK Bachelor's degree plus a relevant Master's degree, or an overseas equivalent. Exceptions are possible where applicants have substantial suitable research or professional experience (admission without a Master's) or where applicants hold a lower second‑class (2:2) Bachelor's degree but possess a relevant Master's. A clear, convincing research proposal is essential; relevant work experience is highly desirable.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a range of built environment careers internationally. Typical destinations cited include academic posts, roles in government and public service, policy formation, and positions within architectural, engineering and media companies. The programme aims to enhance professional ambition and prospects for practising architects.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)
