What you'll study

Research is the core focus: students work on an original doctoral project under expert supervision and may take taught modules in their first year, particularly in research methods and statistics, either by examination or audit depending on prior training. All students receive training in research ethics. UCL’s Doctoral School offers additional multidisciplinary training (for example in statistics, coding and public engagement) that students may take as appropriate to their project.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold at minimum a high upper second‑class first degree in a relevant subject or an equivalent overseas qualification and demonstrate commitment to and ability in research. All applicants are expected to have met with and discussed their project proposal with a prospective supervisor before applying. English language requirements and country‑specific equivalencies are handled via UCL guidance for international applicants.

Career prospects

Graduates leave prepared to design and lead independent research and commonly proceed to postdoctoral roles, academic posts, positions in health services, industry (for example med‑tech or consulting) or third‑sector organisations. The department highlights strong networking opportunities across UCL and with national and international partners; recent graduates have secured roles in the UK and abroad and the department reports a high rate of employment in skilled work within 15 months of graduation.

In addition to stipend or studentship schemes that may be advertised, UCL’s Doctoral School provides a wide range of training courses that can be taken alongside funded or self‑funded study to build multidisciplinary skills valued in postdoctoral and non‑academic careers.
