A practice-focused master's for experienced social workers who want to deepen specialist skills, research capability and leadership in community and human services. Delivered online with flexible full-time or part-time enrolment, the program is suited to practitioners aiming to move into senior clinical, program or management roles within Australia.

What you'll study

Study combines a core research and evaluation stream with three elective specialist minors. Core topics emphasise research-informed practice, applied data collection and evaluating services and policy.

  • Core (Research and Evaluation for Practice, 18 units): Foundations of Research and Evaluation for Practice; Research Informed Decision Making in Practice; Gathering Data in the Real World; Evaluating Practice and Policy.
  • Elective minors (select three, 18 units each): Autism and Complex Disabilities; Leadership in Education; Leading Mental Health and Wellbeing (Workplace and Community); Social Impact; Trauma Responsive Practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold an accredited Bachelor of Social Work qualifying degree or equivalent from an approved tertiary institution. The 2-year stream requires a minimum of three years full-time post-qualifying social work practice; the 1.5-year stream requires a minimum of five years full-time post-qualifying social work practice. This course is not available to international applicants.

Career prospects

The degree is aimed at practitioners seeking progression into senior clinical, program or centre management, policy or leadership roles. Typical roles suggested by the program include Centre Manager, Senior Social Worker, Policy Adviser and Manager of a Program or Support Service. The course highlights advanced practice, leadership and research skills to support evidence-based service development.
