What you'll study

Core emphases include histories and practices of writing about art; differences between journalistic and academic modes; multilingual approaches and translation; experimental formats such as podcasts and textual installations; and the use of AI to augment writing practice. Students are guided to develop critical writing across genres and platforms, and participate in immersion activities including guided studio visits with practising contemporary artists.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. The programme follows a multiple‑entry/multiple‑exit structure: after one year a student may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma; after two years the Master’s degree is awarded. Students who exit after one year may re‑enter in a future cycle to complete the second year and upgrade their qualification.

Career prospects

Graduates can pursue roles as art writers and critics for print and online media, art journalists, curators and curatorial collaborators, content writers or editors for museums and cultural organisations, art consultants advising collectors, and cultural policy analysts for public or private bodies. The programme also supports freelance and independent critical practice.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Tuition is stated as Rs. 1,75,000 per year. Somaiya Vidyavihar offers scholarships of up to 75% based on need and eligibility. On‑campus student housing and meal plans are available: triple‑sharing ₹20,131/month, double‑sharing ₹30,198/month (both include daily cleaning), and a meal plan at ₹6,000/month.
