What you'll study

The programme centers on developing applied educator abilities rather than only theory. Core competency areas include:

• Conceptualization: planning instruction that aligns content, pedagogy and student needs.
• Diagnosis: assessing learning and adapting instruction for individual students.
• Coordination: managing time, resources and the learning environment.
• Communication: engaging students, families and colleagues clearly.
• Integrative interaction: building relationships and responding to changing needs.

Students complete field placements, supervised practicum experiences and a culminating portfolio that demonstrates readiness for licensure. Those pursuing initial licensure also undertake student teaching; candidates working under an emergency or provisional license may be able to satisfy requirements in their current role. The college provides placement assistance when needed.

Entry requirements

• Completed bachelor’s degree with official transcripts.
• Three recommendations, at least two of which are professional or academic.
• Writing samples: one education statement plus two communication samples.
• Passing score on the Praxis Core.
• Completed background check through Alverno College.
• Rolling admissions with upcoming application deadlines noted on the programme page.

Career prospects

The programme supports multiple licensure outcomes and career moves within K–12 education. Pathways include:

• Initial licensure options such as Birth–3rd Grade (general and special education), K–9, Secondary (4th–12th), Cross-Categorical Special Education (K–12) and Art Education (PreK–12, requires a bachelor’s in Art).
• Additional licensure options including Alternative Education, Bilingual/Bicultural Education, English as a Second Language, Reading Teacher and Urban Education.
• Advanced licensure tracks preparing candidates for roles such as Principal, Director of Instruction and Reading Specialist.

Graduates use the programme to enter classrooms with initial licensure, add specialties to broaden their classroom impact, or move into instructional leadership and system-level roles.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Tuition is listed at $800 per credit hour. The college notes opportunities for financial aid and directs applicants to contact the financial aid office by email or phone to discuss funding. There is no application fee; applicants apply via Alverno’s admissions portal.
