What you'll study

• Becoming a Trauma-Informed Educator A & B — identifying behaviors associated with childhood trauma and learning classroom strategies for practitioners.
• Developmental effects of trauma — how trauma impacts child development and the academic setting for students, peers, and teachers.
• Child and community interaction — the child’s interaction within community contexts and implications for practice.
• The Trauma-Sensitive Learning Environment — adapting school environments to increase learning opportunities for children affected by trauma.
• Leadership and well-being — integrating trauma-informed leadership approaches and attention to educator well-being.

Optional: students may attend a summer residency in Keene, NH (one or two weeks) featuring small classes, hands-on activities, and community learning; attendance is optional and can be decided with an adviser.

Entry requirements

• Complete the online admissions application, including essay questions and program-specific materials.
• Submit a resume/CV and official transcripts from all prior institutions (emailed or mailed to the Office of Admissions).
• Provide two letters of recommendation from non-family members able to evaluate professional or academic work.
• Interview with a faculty member if selected (in person, phone, or Skype).
• There is a non-refundable $50 application fee. Master’s and certificate applicants are not required to submit GRE or other standardized test scores.

Career prospects

On completion of the certificate or concentration and depending on state regulations, graduates may pursue roles such as PK–3 teacher or trauma-informed supervisor. The curriculum focuses on classroom- and school-level application of trauma-informed principles to support students affected by trauma.

Scholarships & funding angle

Antioch notes that most students use some form of financial aid and the university offers staff support to explore loans, scholarships, grants, and other funding options. AUNE also offers a 10% discount for three or more students from the same school or district attending concurrently in eligible Education MEd or certificate programs (specific conditions apply).
