What you'll study

Coursework explores the cultural and intellectual expressions that shape human experience. The program draws from multiple humanities disciplines—art history, classics, cultural studies, communications studies, history, literature, music, philosophy and religious studies—allowing students to tailor a course of study that reflects their interests. The BA is designed to strengthen critical and creative thinking, broaden perspectives on local and global affairs, and encourage community and lifelong learning.

Entry requirements

There are no formal admission prerequisites for the four-year program. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and may enrol anytime and begin registering in courses immediately.

Career prospects

The program prepares graduates for occupational diversity and further study; a four-year BA fully prepares students for most graduate programs. The interdisciplinary skill set—critical thinking, cultural literacy and communication—supports careers across education, public service, cultural institutions, communications and other sectors where analytical and interpretive abilities are valued.

Scholarships & funding angle

Tuition is charged on a pay-as-you-go basis per course; fees vary by location and course credits. Athabasca University offers transfer credit and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) to potentially reduce the number of courses required—transfer students must complete a minimum of 30 credits at AU. AU provides a range of financial aid and awards; estimated program costs are listed in the University Calendar and students can apply online any time.
