The program offers a diversity of biological science courses across the discipline. Course topics listed by the university include physiology, sexuality, genetics, health and nutrition. Like other BSc programs, some courses have lab components; AU supplies home lab kits and virtual labs for many courses while a limited number of labs require in-person attendance that can be completed in condensed or multi-lab visits.
There are no formal academic admission requirements. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and may enrol at any time. The post-diploma route is available to students holding a recognized 2- or 3-year science or computing-related diploma; diplomas older than 10 years may be considered if currency in the field is demonstrated by resume and supervisor/employer letter.
Graduates are prepared for roles in health sciences, research and development, and biodiagnostics. AU states the program may be used to meet entrance requirements for pre-medicine, pre-dentistry and pre-veterinary programs at other Canadian universities, though specific entrance criteria vary by institution and should be confirmed with the receiving university.
