A flexible, fully online four-year equivalent biology degree that suits learners seeking careers or advance entry into health-related professions, research, or biodiagnostics. The program accommodates full-time, part-time and accelerated post-diploma routes and includes home and virtual lab options for students who require flexible delivery.

What you'll study

The program offers a diversity of biological science courses across the discipline. Course topics listed by the university include physiology, sexuality, genetics, health and nutrition. Like other BSc programs, some courses have lab components; AU supplies home lab kits and virtual labs for many courses while a limited number of labs require in-person attendance that can be completed in condensed or multi-lab visits.

Entry requirements

There are no formal academic admission requirements. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and may enrol at any time. The post-diploma route is available to students holding a recognized 2- or 3-year science or computing-related diploma; diplomas older than 10 years may be considered if currency in the field is demonstrated by resume and supervisor/employer letter.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles in health sciences, research and development, and biodiagnostics. AU states the program may be used to meet entrance requirements for pre-medicine, pre-dentistry and pre-veterinary programs at other Canadian universities, though specific entrance criteria vary by institution and should be confirmed with the receiving university.

Scholarships & funding angle

Athabasca University provides various financial aid and award options to support students. Tuition is charged per course on a pay-as-you-go basis after an initial application fee; course fees depend on the student’s location and other factors and estimated program costs are published in the AU Calendar. Students with prior post-secondary education can request transfer and advanced credit to potentially reduce program cost and duration.
